If you leave HTML Template blank, Access sets up the Active Server Page to use the formatting specified in the table, query, or form datasheet. You can also apply a template that includes Access-specific tokens that you learned about in Table 26-2. In this case, click the Browse button and locate the StaticTemplate.htm file that you used earlier. In the Data Source Name box, enter the name of the system data source that you created earlier Housing. If your database isn t secured, you should not change the User to Connect As setting. The login ID of Admin is the default ID for all unsecured databases. When your database is secured, you can supply the login ID and password for a user authorized to read the database; however anyone authorized to access the Web page will then have access to your data. Remember that you can also specify this information in the system DSN. When your database is secured, I recommend that you place the security information in the system DSN. (Specify only the name of the workgroup file to ensure a secure login.) In contrast, if you enter it in this dialog box, Access stores the information with the Active Server Page, which any user authorized to access the Web site can read. In the Server URL box, you should enter the HTTP address of the Web site where you plan to publish this Active Server Page. Because you re creating this page to execute on your local server, enter http://localhost as your Web server address. Click OK to export your data to an Active Server Page. 1004

Creating Static and Dynamic Web Pages If you try to open your new Active Server Page as a file from Windows Explorer, you ll either receive an error message or the page will open in your default Web page editor. Because an Active Server Page includes script that must execute on the Web server to fetch the data and format the HTML to display in the client browser, you can open the page successfully only if you copy it to your Web server and then open it in your browser by entering the Web server URL and the address of the page. If you are running Windows XP Professional and have installed and started Internet Information Services, you can see what your new page looks like by copying the files to your local server root Web folder. In most cases, this will be the C:\InetPub\wwwroot folder on your hard drive. Copy the qryFacilities.asp file (that you just created), and the graphics file SumiBack.jpg to this folder. You can then view the page by opening your Web browser, entering the following in the Address box, and pressing Enter:

While the overall number of lines to create the XML in the two code samples is comparable, the first sample that used functional construction is more readable and more closely resembles the resulting XML. When creating XML using the imperative model, we need to create temporary variables for the various elements that make up the resulting XML. The result is code that is less readable and more prone to errors. When thinking about XML, we often visualize the hierarchy of nodes that make up the XML. When building XML using imperative Add method calls, the code can t easily take on a shape similar to the resulting XML. With functional construction, we can write code that has a shape and feel similar to the resulting XML. This allows us to stay focused on the XML and not have to switch gears. The end result is a more pleasant and enjoyable programming experience. To enable functional construction, the following three constructors are available on XElement.

Note In some cases, you might receive an error from the server indicating that it could not open the connection. You can usually solve this problem by closing the Housing Reservations database and then trying the Active Server Page again. After your Web server successfully connects to your database, you should be able to open the Housing Reservations database, change some of the data (open the qryFacilities query and edit one or more rows), and refresh the page to see the changes appear instantly in the Active Server Page. 1005
