For example, not all patterns have alternative names or variants. Alternatively, for some patterns it is hard, or unnecessary, to provide detailed descriptions of its structure, behavior, and implementation, because all information can be integrated well into the core solution description. The architect Christopher Alexander laid the foundations on which many of today s pattern approaches are built. He, and members of the Center for Environmental Structure in Berkeley, California, spent more than twenty years developing an approach to architecture that used patterns. This entirely new attitude in architecture and planning is published in a series of books [ANA+87] [AIS+77] [Ale79] [ASA+75]. Alexander describes over two hundred and fifty patterns that span a wide range of scale and abstraction, from structuring towns and regions down to paving paths and decorating individual rooms. They read Alexander s books and were inspired to adapt his ideas for software development. Ward and Kent s first five patterns deal with the design of user interfaces their patterns WINDOW PER TASK, FEW PANES, STANDARD PANES, NOUNS AND VERBS, and SHORT MENUS mark the birth of patterns in software engineering.

Channels appear in three different forms: ascending (a series of higher highs and higher lows), descending (lower highs and lower lows), and horizontal (equal highs and equal lows). A stock breaking above its ascending channel or breaking below its descending channel isn t usually a good trade, because it is simply moving in the same direction at a faster rate. The better trades are those where a reversal pattern takes place. Figure 8.12, for example, shows a stock that was moving higher within an ascending channel. When it nally broke beneath support late in October, it lost about 20 percent of its value, and the stock was clearly in a downtrend versus its prior uptrend. Because channels are made of a trendline pair, the same guidelines can apply. The idea of prices moving back toward the trendline after a breakout is still true. For example, when prices break beneath a channel s supporting line, they can move higher (in spite of the bearish signal) and touch the line that used to represent support (Figure 8.13).
